FoQaCiA WORKSHOP
Pioneering the Foundations of Quantum Computing
JUNE 2-6, 2025
INL - International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory | Braga, Portugal
About
This workshop marks the halfway milestone of the FoQaCiA project, a groundbreaking collaboration between leading researchers from Europe and Canada. Funded through a flagship partnership between Horizon Europe and NSERC, FoQaCiA aims to chart the boundaries between the computational power of quantum devices and classical computers, identifying the "line in the sand" that defines tasks with quantum speedups versus those that remain classically simulable.
The workshop will explore the four central, interrelated themes of the project:
Quantum Contextuality, Non-classicality, and Quantum Advantage
The Complexity of Classical Simulation of Quantum Computation
The Arithmetic of Quantum Circuits
The Efficiency of Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computation
At FoQaCiA, we believe the future success of quantum computing hinges on foundational insights. Investments in large-scale quantum technologies will only achieve their full potential when guided by a deeper understanding of the fundamental principles underpinning quantum systems.
Join us as we bridge continents and disciplines to push the boundaries of quantum computing!
Programme
The second FoQaCiA Workshop will offer a dynamic program designed to foster collaboration and innovation in foundational quantum computing research. Spanning five days, the workshop will feature a carefully curated agenda:
Tutorials for Students: The first 1.5 days (Monday and Tuesday morning) will be dedicated to tutorials aimed at students, providing a solid foundation for engaging with the workshop's advanced topics.
Invited and Contributed Talks: From Tuesday afternoon to Friday morning, the program will include longer invited talks and shorter flash contributed talks.
Other highlights of the workshop include:
Keynote Presentations: Delivered by leading experts from Canada and Europe.
Panel Discussions: Exploring emerging questions in quantum computing.
Collaborative Sessions: Dedicated to advancing the project's core themes.
Networking Opportunities: Encouraging cross-disciplinary dialogue and collaboration.
The workshop's agenda will align with the four central themes of the FoQaCiA project:
Quantum Contextuality, Non-classicality, and Quantum Advantage
The Complexity of Classical Simulation of Quantum Computation
The Arithmetic of Quantum Circuits
The Efficiency of Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computation
A detailed programme will be published soon.
Abstract Submission
Abstract submissions for the second FoQaCiA Workshop will open soon! We invite researchers, students, and professionals in quantum computing to submit their work for consideration. Submissions will be accepted for:
Short Talks: Concise presentations designed to highlight emerging ideas and recent findings.
Posters: Visual displays to showcase research and foster in-depth discussions.
Both (Short Talk and Poster): An opportunity to present your work through both formats for maximum engagement.
This is an excellent opportunity to present your work, engage in cross-disciplinary discussions, and contribute to advancing the key themes of the FoQaCiA project, which include:
Quantum Contextuality, Non-classicality, and Quantum Advantage: Exploring the principles that underpin quantum computational power and their implications for real-world applications.
The Complexity of Classical Simulation of Quantum Computation: Investigating the boundaries between classical and quantum computational capabilities.
The Arithmetic of Quantum Circuits: Delving into the mathematical structures and operations that drive quantum algorithms.
The Efficiency of Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computation: Advancing methods to enhance the reliability and scalability of quantum systems.
DEADLINE SUBMISSION: 20 APRIL 2025
We look forward to your contributions, which will shape the future of quantum computing!
Location
The INL - International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, located in Braga (North of Portugal), was founded by the governments of Portugal and Spain under an international legal framework to perform interdisciplinary research and deploy and articulate nanotechnology for the benefit of society. INL aims to become the worldwide hub for nanotechnology addressing society’s grand challenges.
The INL Strategy is implemented by having a commitment towards operational excellence and continuous improvement in order to deliver results of exceptional value, strengthening INL’s sustainability through the valorisation of its critical knowledge.
Braga is one of Portugal’s most beautiful cities and the third-largest city in Portugal. Considered one of the youngest European cities it’s packed to the brim with history and culture, of which the most famous is probably Bom Jesus do Monte - a World Heritage site by UNESCO, perfect for those in search of a small historical city.
It is just a 40-minute car ride from Porto International Airport and 60 minutes from Vigo's International Airport. 10 minutes away from the main highway that serves Braga (A3) and close to the Atlantic Ocean.
