FoQaCiA WORKSHOP

Foundations of Quantum Computational Advantage

2–6 JUNE 2025

INL – International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory | Braga, Portugal

About

The workshop is organised by the FoQaCiA project, a consortium bringing together researchers from Europe and Canada. The event follows the 1st FoQaCiA Workshop held last year at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Canada.

The workshop will feature invited talks by experts on FoQaCiA’s topics, and also welcomes contributed flash talks and posters. It will also include 1.5 days of advanced tutorials targeted at students and young researchers. Some support for student participation is available (more details soon).

Funded through a flagship partnership between Horizon Europe and NSERC, FoQaCiA aims to chart the boundary between the computational power of quantum devices and classical computers, drawing the "line in the sand" that separates tasks admitting quantum speedup from those that remain classically simulable.

The workshop will explore the four central, interrelated themes of the project:

  1. Quantum contextuality, non-classicality, and quantum advantage

  2. Complexity of classical simulation of quantum computation

  3. Arithmetic of quantum circuits

  4. Efficiency of fault-tolerant quantum computation

Our view is that the future success of quantum computing critically hinges on advances at the most fundamental level. Large-scale investments in quantum technologies will only pay off if they draw on a deeper understanding of the fundamental principles underpinning quantum systems.

Join us as we bridge continents and disciplines to push the boundaries of quantum computing!

Location

The INL – International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, located in Braga (North of Portugal), was founded by the governments of Portugal and Spain under an international legal framework to perform interdisciplinary research and deploy and articulate nanotechnology for the benefit of society. INL aims to become the worldwide hub for nanotechnology addressing society’s grand challenges.

The INL Strategy is implemented by having a commitment towards operational excellence and continuous improvement in order to deliver results of exceptional value, strengthening INL’s sustainability through the valorisation of its critical knowledge.

Braga is one of Portugal’s most beautiful cities and its third largest. Considered one of the youngest European cities it’s packed to the brim with history and culture, of which the most famous is probably Bom Jesus do Monte, a World Heritage site by UNESCO, perfect for those in search of a small historical city.

It is just a 40-minute car ride from Porto International Airport and 60 minutes from Vigo's International Airport. 10 minutes away from the main highway that serves Braga (A3) and close to the Atlantic Ocean.
